FOB vs CIF: Why Your China Car Quote Looks Cheap But Isn't

Quick answer: FOB (Free On Board) and CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) are not two prices for the same thing — they stop at different points. FOB covers the car and loading at the Chinese port. CIF adds ocean freight and insurance to your destination port. A "cheap" FOB quote is not comparable to a CIF quote until you add freight, insurance, duty and local handling to the first one.

The two terms, in plain language

TermSeller paysYou pay from
FOB NanshaVehicle, export paperwork, inland trucking to port, export clearance, loading onto vesselThe moment the car crosses the ship's rail at Nansha
CIF Alger / LagosEverything in FOB plus ocean freight and marine insurance to your portArrival at your destination port (but not duty, not clearing, not inland transport)

Both are legitimate. The mistake is comparing them side by side as if they were the same product.

The four cost blocks nobody puts in one email

A real landed-cost estimate has four blocks. Get all four in writing before you commit:

  1. Vehicle price — quoted FOB Nansha by the exporter
  2. Ocean freight + marine insurance — quoted by your forwarder (or built into CIF)
  3. Import duty, VAT and any age-based taxes — set by your country, the biggest variable
  4. Port handling, clearing agent, inland transport — local, and routinely underestimated

Dealers who only compare block 1 regularly discover that a car $600 cheaper FOB costs more to land because of block 3 or 4.

Why exporters default to FOB

That is why serious export quotes state the port explicitly: *FOB Nansha*. A quote that just says "FOB China" without naming the port is not a complete quote.

A comparison checklist that actually works

When two suppliers send you numbers, normalise them before comparing:

Red flags in a "cheap" quote

  1. No port named. FOB where?
  2. No trim specified. The cheapest trim of the same model is not the same car.
  3. Documents not listed. Missing certificate of origin or export declaration means trouble at your end.
  4. No validity period. A quote without an expiry is a quote that can move.
  5. Payment demanded 100% up front with no verifiable company behind the name.
